HOW TO GET RID OF ANTS
One ant is one too many. And there’s never just one, is there? Hundreds, even thousands, of ants are on the move right now, looking to take up residence in your home. If you don’t want these pests becoming part of the family, here are three quick and easy ways to get rid of them. (Don’t forget to follow label directions.)
Kill the ones you see.
If you see an ant or two, you might be tempted to overlook them. But don’t. They may bite, they troll for food (your food!), and they have lots of friends and relatives. Control them by spraying with Ortho® Ant & Roach Killer1.
Control the colony.
Common household ants live in colonies, complete with a queen. So if you want to control the ants in your home, you have to control the colony. The easiest way to do that is to put a continuous protection bait formula like Ortho® Home Defense Liquid Ant Bait directly in their path. Put it in the kitchen, bathroom, and anywhere else you see ants (always read and follow label directions). If you can identify the ant trail, put the bait station right in the middle of it. Ants will take the bait back to the nest to share with the queen and her colony, for a no-mess kill.
Prevent future ants.
To prevent ants for up to 12 months*, use a protective barrier like Ortho® Home Defense Insect Killer for Indoor & Perimeter2 around interior and exterior walls, windows, and doors. Use around baseboards, under cabinets, and in every room, including kitchen, pantry, basement, and family room (again, always read and follow label directions).
And while ants may bug you most when they’re in your home, it’s important to remember that they come in from the outside. Control the ants in your lawn for up to 3 months by spreading Ortho® Home Defense Insect Killer for Lawns Granules3 throughout your lawn.
Here are a few more ideas to help keep ants out of your home:
- Store sweets, leftovers, and other food in tightly sealed containers.
- Don’t leave standing water in the sink.
- Compost kitchen scraps and transfer other garbage to covered, outdoor trash bins.
- Seal cracks and holes with caulk, paying special attention to openings in and around your house’s foundation and vinyl siding.
- Replace or repair torn window screens
