Problem: Africanized bees
Apis mellifera scutellata Although portrayed in science fiction and movies as a killer bee, the Africanized bee is a variety of the common honeybee, with a similarly potent sting. It is the Africanized bee''s aggressive behavior and tendency to attack in swarms that make it dangerous to livestock and people. A South American entomologist produced the bee by crossing a vigorous African variety with a more docile Italian variety in an attempt to develop a more vigorous strain of bee for honey production. Some of the bees escaped and produced colonies that have been reproducing and spreading northward. Colonies are now established in the United States from Texas to California.
Avoid squeezing them, as this will force venom into the wound. Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the swollen area. If a severe reaction develops, go to a doctor or the hospital immediately. Removing the hive should be done by a beekeeper or licensed pest control operator.
