Problem: Dull Lawn Mower Blade
If a reel or rotary lawn mower is dull, it tears the tip off the grass blade rather than cutting it cleanly. This can occur on any grass but especially on perennial ryegrass and tall fescues, which have tough fibers running the length of the blade. If the blade tip is torn, these fibers usually remain protruding from the torn end. It is particularly important to keep the mower sharp when cutting these grasses.
Sharpen reel mowers two or three times during the growing season. Sharpen rotary mowers after every few mowings. Reel mowers may be sharpened at a hardware store that offers this service. Rotary mower blades can be removed and sharpened with a file.
